General City Information

View on Sochi from the Black Sea

View on Sochi from the Black Sea

Sochi is a Russian resort city, situated in Krasnodarski Krai (the Krasnodar Region) just north of the southern Russian border. It sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Stretching for 145 km, Greater Sochi is claimed to be the longest city in Europe. The city has been selected to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.

Protected from the cold north winds by the mountains and open to the warmth and moisture of the Black Sea in the south Sochi has a surprisingly warm climate for the latitude; winter temperatures rarely fall much below freezing (+7 °C (44.6 °F) in January). The average summer high temperature ranges between +26 °C (78.8 °F) and +32 °C (89.6 °F). There are 200 days of sunshine on average a year.

Many people still wonder why The Black Sea is called “black”. It is true that the colours of water differ depending on the weather. Clear skies colour it a shade of blue-green. When it’s cloudy the water is silvery grey or azure. There is no evidence of it ever being black.

Sochi is the only one of larger Russian towns classed as a subtropical resort. Apart from the scenic Caucasus Mountains and pebbly and sandy beaches, the place attracts its visitors with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant Stalinist architecture. At the high season, when the city hosts the annual film festival “Kinotavr”, about two million people visit Greater Sochi. The city is also a summer getaway for the Russia’s elite.

The Mountain

Sochi has Europe’s most northerly tea plantations.

The Adler-Sochi International Airport takes care of international and domestic flights.

The Sochi Light Metro is currently under constriction, the project to be completed by 2014.

Sochi is also known for its sport facilities: a local tennis school spawned the careers of such notable players as Grand Slam champions Maria Sharapova and Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Kafelnikov spent much of his childhood here, while Sharapova relocated to Florida at the age of 7). In the late 2005, the Russian Football Union announced that it was planning to establish a year-round training centre for the country’s national teams in Sochi. The city’s warm climate was cited as one of the main incentives.

The Mountain-Climatic Resort Krasnaya Polyana

The Mountain-Climatic Resort Krasnaya Polyana

The settlement Krasnaya Polyana is located in the mountain area and is surrounded by picturesque mountains with the height reaching 2500 m. Mountains define the unique microclimate of this site. The winter is mild without hard frosts but with abundant snowfalls. The average air temperature in January-February is about 0 degrees. Seldom has it reached its lowest mark: the −10 C. The foothills (550—600 m above the sea level) have a stable snow cover from the middle of January and to the end of March.

The resort is rapidly developing. Nowadays the building of hotels, mountain-skiing and entertainment complexes reached the stage of practical implementation. The area offers great opportunities for isolated rest or extreme sports alike.

The total length of the most popular slopes is about 25 km. There are mountain-skiing routes of various class of complexity. Cable-cars and monorails take care of transportation of the skiers, moving as much as 1000 people per hour. Skiing routes are either 9 km or 7 km long. The latter is cut through forest along the first, second and third turns of the cableway, with it’s width from 50 to 150 m.
