General Infomation

Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk

In 1628 between rivers of Yenissei and Katshi the Kozaks built a fortress. The fortress was named Krasni and served as a defense from the Tartars. In 1690 at the place of the fortress the city of Krasnoyarsk was founded. Like many Russian cities Krasnoyarsk was first built of wood. That is why a lot of the houses were destroyed after the conflagration in 1773. The architect from Saint-Petersburg was sent to restore Krasnoyarsk. He made the town look the way it looks today.

In 1895 the Transsiberien Railway was built. This made for a fast development of Krasnoyarsk.

It also served as a place of exile for political prisoners of Russian Empire, most noted the Decembrists. They were sent to Krasnoyarsk after their revolt in December 1825 has failed.

Today Krasnoyarsk with 920 000 inhabitants is an important administrative and cultural center of the region. It offers a lot to its guests. The city is famous for the Paraskeva Chapel, the Government Building and the Clock Tower. The bridges of Krasnoyarsk do offer a thrilling sight too.

The Railway Bridge over Yenissey was built in 1899 by engineer Knorre. The project was based on drawings of engineer Proskuryakov. In 1990 this project was rewarded as the greatest achievement of a technical thought.

To add to the above, there are 166 monuments in Krasnoyarsk, treasured both locally and nationally.

The national park “Stolby” (Pillars) is especially worth mentioning. It is situated on the right bank of Yenissey between the rivers Mana and Basaicha. It meets Krasnoyarsk at its south –west end. The park covers more than 47 000 hectares and is considered to be one of the main attractions of the whole region. It displaces unique rocks, all of different shape; some reach 120 meters in height. Each rock was given its own name. Besides, there are 600 varieties of plants, 178 species of birds, 50 species of animals and 20 species of fish.
