ALONG BAIKAL BY RAIL – A DAY TRIP

Around the western edge of Baikal Lake by a small branch of railway (84 km. long) which is no longer used to serve general public. The tour starts at the mouth of Angara River and finishes at villages of Kultuk and Slyudiyanka at the south-west of the lake.

Once on tour you will see some stunning examples of structural engineering and architectural design: stone and concrete viaducts and a railway bridge with solid metal foundation resting on stone pillars. The beautiful valley of Polovinnaiya River offers picturesque backdrop to your journey. The railway «Krugo-baikalskaya» - literally the way around Baikal — is a historical landmark of the 20-th century currently under conservation. This relatively small stretch boasts 424 visually and technically unique sites including 39 tunnels, 114 reinforcing walls, 50 galleries made of stone and metal.

The railway used to link two parts of the Trans-Siberian terminating on either side of the lake. The cost of it at the time was highest in Russia and the velocity of construction works was tremendous.

Long 30-minute stops on every designated station. During summer an extra 2-hour stop for a picnic is scheduled. The tour is bookable at any time of year. However, during winter months the train only runs at the weekends and on Wednesdays.
