THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM (with/without transfer)

THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM

This guided tour (with or without transfer) through the State Hermitage Museum, will introduce you to the main rooms and expositions of the largest museum of Russia and one of the most significant museums of the world.

At present the museum occupies five buildings: the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, the New Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre.

Besides the huge collection of paintings, the museum also acquired collections of prints and drawings, classical antiquities, objects of Western European applied art, weapons, coins, medals and books (Voltaire&’s library). In the 19th century the Hermitage began to receive archaeological artefacts which, among other things, formed the nucleus of the celebrated collection of Scythian gold.

At the Hermitage you can explore the art of Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Classical Greece and its colonies in the northern Black Sea area. You can also examine the culture of the Etruscans and the primitive tribes of Siberia, as well as see Egyptian mummies, antique pottery, Tanagra statuary and much more.

The interiors of the Winter Palace are among the masterpieces of baroque. Apparently, it would take a visitor almost 15 years to appreciate all the treasures the museum houses. That is if one stays at the museum 8 hours a day spending one minute examining each exhibit.

THREE CATHEDRALS OF ST. PETERSBURG

St. Isaac's Cathedral

This guided tour by car/bus will take you to the 3 main cathedrals of St. Petersburg: St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Savior on the Spilled Blood Church and the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. During the tour you will see the interior and exterior of all three buildings.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the most defining landmarks of St. Petersburg. The dome of St. Isaac’s dominates the skyline and its gilded cupola can be seen glistening from all over the city.

Alexander Nevsky Lavra

The beautifully decorated interiors with their characteristic malachite and lazurite columns are a treat to the senses.

A magnificent view of the centre of St. Petersburg is to be had from the upper colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral at a height of 43 meters.

The Church of the Resurrection, known as the "Saviour on the Spilt Blood", was erected on the place where the Emperor Alexander II was assassinated.

During the Soviet period, the church was considered to have no artistic value and was used as a storehouse. But in 1997 the restored church was reopened to the public.

This church with its elegant domes and magnificent mosaic panels is a stunning example of Muscovite religious architecture period in St. Petersburg.

The Church of the Saviour on the Spilt Blood

Alexander Nevsky Lavra (or Alexander Nevsky Monastery) was founded by Peter the Great at the southern end of the Nevsky Prospekt in St Petersburg to house the relics of Alexander Nevsky, patron saint of the newly-founded Russian capital.

The monastery area contains a majestic Neoclassical cathedral and other numerous structures of the same period. It also contains the Lazarev and Tikhvin Cemeteries, with the tombs of Lomonosov, Suvorov, Karamzin, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky and other Russian celebrities
