Volgogradprint version

General Infomation

Volgograd is one of the biggest and significant cities on the south-east of the European part of Russia. Situated between the Volga River and the Ergeninskiy Heights with the population of more than a million Volgograd occupies a stretch of nearly 100 km in length (although only 12 km in width). The area has continental climate with winter temperatures swinging between -10C and -35C and going up to +30/35C at summer.

The history of Volgograd may well be starting from its first mentioning in 1579 as Tsaritsiyn. The town changed its name trice: first time round in 1925 when the original name of Tsaritsiyn was changed to Stalingrad and in 1961, after the end of Stalin's reign, when it finally became Volgograd. However old this town may be, its buildings suffered great deal of distraction during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943, and most of the city had to be rebuilt. Many of the city's landmarks are linked to its wartime past.

Due to its geographical aspect, the town always was a centre of commerce and industry of the Russian South. Modern Volgograd still holds this vital status today.

Its industries include shipbuilding, oil refining, steel and aluminium production, manufacture of machinery and vehicles, and chemical production. A large hydroelectric power plant stands a short distance to the north of Volgograd.

Volgograd is a major railway junction with links to Moscow, the Donbas region of Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Siberia. It stands at the east end of the Volga-Don Canal, opened in 1952 to link the two great rivers of southern Russia. European route E40, the longest European route connecting Calais, France with Ridder, Kazakhstan, passes through Volgograd. Volgograd's public transport system includes a light rail service known as the Volgograd metrotram. Educational institutions include Volgograd State University, Volgograd State Technical University (former Volgograd Polytechnical University), Volgograd State Medical University, Volgograd State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Volgograd Academy of Industry, and Volgograd State Pedagogical University.
