General City Information

Panoramic view of Perm

Panoramic view of Perm

Town of Perm stretches for 65 km. along both banks of the river Kama, an important tributary of the river Volga, which comes down from the Ural Mountains to become the most significant river of Russia. The Permian region is as large as France but is substantially less crowded. However, town itself has a population of more then 1 million. It puts it on the 13th place in the hierarchy of Russian towns according to their population. The town sits at the western edge of the Urals, and belongs to the European part of Russia—just!

The history of the Permian region cannot be separated from the name of the aristocrat family Stroganoff. This family (mentioned in relation to the Permian region for the first time in 1597) by the 1700 owned about 70% of all salt refineries. Initially Perm owes its existence to a copper mill which had its headquarters near small river Yegoshikha, a tributary of the Kama River. The first stone building of Perm was the St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, which was built in 1764. Perm was proclaimed the capital of the region by a decree of Catherine the Great on 20th of November 1780.

Until resent time due to its military-industrial complexes, the town was closed to the regular visitors. Today visiting the town is not a problem. Its still one of the most important economical centers located in the Urals. If you are visiting Perm you will be surprised by the high standards of its theatres. The town boasts very long list of musical traditions. In 1878 an opera house was established, in 1926 the first ballet season was opened, and since that time there were regularly held internationally successful performances.

The Permians are particularly proud of their Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Peter Iliyich Tchaikovsky. In 1945 a ballet academy was formed as an offshoot from the well-known Vaganov Ballet School of Leningrad. This school together with the most famous Kirov Ballet was evacuated to Perm during the Second World War. Until today the uniqueness of Russian ballet art is undisputed, and artists such as Nijinskij or Nurijey are well known names to all fans of ballet. Perm’s own Ballet Theater also contributed a lot to the reputation of the town. Along with Moscow and St. Petersburg, Perm is a theatrical Mecca of Russia.
