General City Information

 The city center

Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk lies at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers. The city is located 30 km from the Chinese border. The Amur river is a natural border between Russia and China. Khabarovsk with its 600 000 inhabitants is the second largest city in the Russian Far East, after Vladivostok. Besides, the city became the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia. It is 8533 km with the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow and only a short motor boat trip from China away.

Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk is quite young – it is only 142 years old. The city was named after the Russian explorer Yerofey Khabarov. Originally on the place of Khabarovsk the Russians founded the military outpost of Khabarovka (Khabarovsk). The post later became an important industrial centre for the region. 31 May 1858 is considered to be the date of the city’s foundation.

The first buildings in Khabarovsk were the military ones. But only a few years later houses, shops, warehouses and a casern were built in the city. Due to its advantageous geographical location Khabarovsk developed very fast. Fruitful soil, fish and fur trade attracted enterprising people to the city. For travellers this “stop” on the Transsib is interesting first of all with its beautiful nature and nearness to China.
