The Ekaterinburg region is the industrial, political, and cultural center of the Urals. It’s the third most important region in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is situated 40 km away from the boundary between Europe and Asia. An obelisk marks this boundary. The region around the town is still called Sverdlovskaya Oblast’. This is its old Soviet name, kept by the vote of people of the region.

The region is one of the oldest industrial areas of Russia. In 1598 the first town was founded. It was called Verhoturye and became the first capital of the Urals. In 1723 Ekaterinburg itself was founded and named after Tsarina Catherine the Great. The industrial development begun at the end of the 17th century and was connected to the name of Petr Demidov, who had mining and milling sites. In the 18th and 19th century the Urals were the chief site for metal and steel industry in Russia.

Today the region is one of the most urbanised and industrialised regions of the country. 1.3 million live in Ekaterinburg and it is the 5th largest city in Russia. Since 1999 the town has got a Metro system. Ekaterinburg is a financial cultural and industrial center of the Urals today.
